  1. As hard as it is, treat a young addict with dignity. My son was 16 and homeless. He called one night in the middle of a storm asking if he could come home. He said he was cold and tired and hungry. I told him he could stay for the night if he agreed to go to school the next day. I picked him up and brought him home. He was still angry and volatile but I held my tongue for once. He ate got a shower and went to bed. The next morning was difficult. He was still very angry and verbally abusive. I noticed his shoes were soaking wet. I quietly found him another pair of shoes and placed them by his chair. I always try to remember that he is a child of the Living God and hope that by treating him as one will someday cause him to treat himself with the dignity all people deserve.
